Elmiron Lawsuits: Is This An Elmiron Class Action?

While it is true that pharmaceutical companies have invented products that have radically improved peoples’ lives, there are some drugs that can cause irreversible side effects and even death. Recent studies have shown that this is the case with Janssen Pharmaceuticals’ drug named Elmiron.

Elmiron is commonly prescribed to treat bladder pain and interstitial cystitis. In 2018, the American Academy of Ophthalmology uncovered that many patients who had been regularly taking this drug were diagnosed with retinal maculopathy.

The article also mentioned case studies of six patients who were treated at the Emory Eye Center between the years 2015 and 2017. These patients had developed pigmentary maculopathy of unsure origin after being exposed to Elmiron during their treatment of interstitial cystitis.

Maculopathy stands for a number of pathological disorders that affect the central part of the retina. If Maculopathy is not treated promptly, then it can worsen and lead to vision loss or blindness.

Ever since the connection between Elmiron and maculopathy has been released, more and more patients are coming forward to participate in a class action lawsuit. The Elmiron drug complaint alleges that Janssen failed to caution the users as well as their doctors of full side effects associated with the drug.

Even though Janssen Pharmaceuticals has made some of the side effects clear, the packaging of Elmiron does not have warnings about the possibility of maculopathy.

Just some of the adverse effects of Elmiron that reported by the users are:

  • Bruising
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Diarrhea
  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Headaches
  • Skin rash
  • And more

Other than the symptoms list above, the specific type of macular degeneration has been associated with Elmiron.

This is a type of macular injury manifests itself differently and shows variations from person to person. However, there are some common features and symptoms of this problem. Patients experience two or more of these symptoms being:

  1. Parafoveal pigmented deposits: In this condition, the small blood vessels and capillaries formed around macula turn abnormal. This condition results in vision loss.
  2. Vitelliform deposits: In this condition, yellow-colored lesions that are round in shape get formed under the macula.
  3. Retinal pigment epithelium atrophy: This is a common sign of age-induced macular degeneration.

Other than these three conditions, patients also frequently suffer from or develop darkened spots, or hyperpigmentation, around their retina.
